To Remember Me

A day will come that will relieve my external body of all pains, sufferings and it’s causes. A day will come when my body will lie upon a little white sheet neatly tucked under 4 corners of a mattress located in a hospital, busily occupied with the living and the dying. Maybe I die very silently… At a certain moment, the doctor will determine that my brain has stopped functioning, and for all intents and purposes my life has stopped. The news may be shocking regarding to my age. But, don’t let death overpower life. If life is a big surprise to most of us, then why should death be a more bigger one?

When that happens, don’t attempt to instill artificial life into my body by the use of a machine. Do not shed tears over me or show pity. And, don’t call this my ‘deathbed’. Let it be called ‘the bed of life.’  Let my body be taken from it to help others lead fuller lives and fulfill my cause on the earth.

Give my sight to a man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby’s face, or love in the eyes of a woman. Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused nothing but endless days of pain… Give my blood to the teenager who was pulled from the wreckage of his car, so that he might live to see his grandchildren play. Give my kidneys to the one who depends on a machine to exist from week to week. Give my liver to the one who has troubled his wife and children all his life by being an alcoholic. Take my bones, every muscle, every fibre and nerve in the body and find a way to make a crippled child walk. Explore every corner of my brain, take my cells, if necessary and let them grow, so that, a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain against her window.

Burn what is left of me and scatter the ashes to the wind to help the flowers grow, instead of polluting a holy river. If you must bury something, let it be my faults, weaknesses and desires. Give my sins to the Devil, and my soul to God…

If, by chance, you wish to remember me… Do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. Never refuse to someone who has come to seek help. If you do, what I’ve asked for, I’ll live forever…

      1. Oh that’s not how it goes. There are only specific organs that I can donate. Yes the body gets somewhat distorted but ultimately it has to be burnt (according to Hindu customs) so there are no issues. Secondly, it is very helpful for those who get the organs.

      2. According the monotheistic religions , God informed us to bury the dead. So that we may have a grave to visit , to cry upon , to speak to . A place where our loved ones can be close by “even if it’s just bones “. God didn’t say anything about helping other people by giving organs. But the body MUST be buried and not burned.
I know that Hindus, Buddhists and some atheists burn their bodies, well I don’t see the point.

  1. Quite noble thoughts. I too cherish something similar in my heart… after-wishes. Sometimes we think we weren’t as useful to others while we are alive. Or may be yes, we are so. But being useful even after you’ve gone, is a very noble idea. There was this film called “Ship of Theseus” produced by Kiran Rao (Aamir Khan’s wife…without starring Aamir Khan, or any recognisable actor). See if you can watch it… it speaks of a similar person. Have a nice week! 🙂

  2. Not sure the viewpoint from all religious aspects, but on a humanitarian level, we can even be useful in time of death. The body is but a carcass, better good to someone else then burned or buried. Like scrap metal. The soul moves on. Nice post.
